Special Education Students Teach Election Process

Published: November 3, 2008

NEW PORT RICHEY - Special education students at Cotee River Elementary took the lead role recently in teaching the rest of the student body about the presidential election.

Peyton Wise, 5; Terissa Gautney, 5; Kathryn Shull, 11; and Tristan Klaus, 6, were among those who took turns in three assemblies as guides to the intriguing world of Barack Obama and John McCain. The students are orthopedically impaired, use wheelchairs and have problems communicating verbally.

With a little assistance from technology and their teachers, they operated a taped multimedia presentation that included a review of the presidential election process and a reading of a book titled "Duck for President."

"This is a very good opportunity for our students to interact with the basic education students," said Maria Barrera, one of the special education teachers who played a key role in organizing the assemblies.

Architectural Panel, City Council To Review Sangria's Proposal

TAMPA - A proposed Sangria's restaurant in Seminole Heights needs approval from the city's Architectural Review Commission before its owners can remodel and enlarge a former auto repair shop.

The owners want to close part of Mohawk Avenue, which dead-ends at Cherokee Avenue and an Interstate 275 exit.

A hearing is scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday at city hall, 315 E. Kennedy Blvd. The commission must review the plans because the site is in a historic district.

The former South Howard Avenue restaurant closed in 2007 because of a landlord dispute and its owners opted to relocate to the former Larry's 4X4 Auto Service Center, 512 E. Hillsborough Ave.

In February, the Tampa City Council approved beer, wine and liquor sales for the restaurant. On Nov. 13, the council is scheduled to consider rezoning the property.
