BEREA, Ohio - Quarterback Derek Anderson has been benched by the Cleveland Browns, who will start popular backup Brady Quinn on Thursday night against the Denver Broncos.

The switch was announced Monday by the team, just hours after Coach Romeo Crennel said he had no plans to make a change.

Anderson, who has been inconsistent this season, threw a costly interception that was returned for a touchdown in the final minutes of Sunday's 37-27 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. The pick prompted Browns fans to begin chants of "Brady! Brady!" for Quinn, the former Notre Dame star who has thrown just eight passes in two seasons.

A team spokesman said Crennel and Quinn would not be available for comment until today.

Earlier, Quinn was asked for his reaction to hearing fans call his name.

"We lost the game, really that's all that matters," he said. "That's something in the NFL, everyone always loves the backup. That's just how it is. It's not any difference any place else."

BEARS: One day after leaving the field on a cart, quarterback Kyle Orton was undergoing more tests on his right ankle to determine the extent of his injury.

Orton was injured in the final minute of the first half in Sunday's 27-23 victory against the Detroit Lions, forcing the Bears to turn to former starter Rex Grossman. And Chicago might be without Orton for the next few weeks.

"I'm not playing doctor; you shouldn't either," Coach Lovie Smith said Monday. "You should let us come and tell you once we know for sure exactly what the injury is. We're hopeful, I'll just say that."

BROWNS: Wide receiver Joe Jurevicius, forced to sit out the 2008 season because of a serious staph infection in his surgically repaired right knee, plans to come back next season for his beloved Browns.

"I'm not giving up," the former Bucs receiver said. "I'm playing next year. It's not, I'm going to try. I am playing next year."

LIONS: Quarterback Daunte Culpepper agreed to a two-year deal with Detroit (0-8) and said he would sign after taking a physical.

SAINTS: Placed starting defensive end Charles Grant on injured reserve and re-signed veteran defensive tackle Hollis Thomas.

TEXANS: Quarterback Matt Schaub injured his knee and will be out at least two weeks, possibly up to a month. Coach Gary Kubiak said officials were still trying to determine the severity of the injury, but that Schaub was on crutches Monday.

APPEAL: Houston Texans long snapper Bryan Pittman met with league officials in New York to appeal a possible suspension after testing positive for the weight-loss diuretic Bumetanide.

Bumetanide is banned under the NFL steroids policy because it is considered a masking agent for steroids. According to the NFL's policy, the first positive test results in a four-game suspension.

Pittman is one of six to eight players allegedly under investigation for taking Bumetanide.

LEGAL: Former Denver Bronco Billy Jenkins, accused of killing a motor scooter driver in a hit-and-run collision, waived his preliminary hearing. A judge in Centennial, Colo., set his arraignment for Dec. 11. Jenkins faces charges of vehicular homicide, leaving the scene, driving under the influence and failure to provide insurance.
