Florida's leading Democrats say an Obama victory translates to success for their party in a state that has leaned Republican over several presidential elections.
State Chief Financial Officer Alex Sink, widely considered Florida's rising Democratic star, said the Obama win "provides the basis for building a strong foundation."
Added U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor, "We are on the verge of a significant change in this society."
That sentiment was shared by hundreds of campaign volunteers who gathered at the Tampa Marriott Waterside. The crowd erupted when the networks called the election for Obama, and many of those who embraced upon the news were college-age voters.
Throughout Election Day, lines at the University of South Florida and the University of Central Florida were hundreds deep. Student activists say their peers were galvanized by eight years of abysmal leadership from President Bush, and they took to Obama as a savior.
"He speaks to us in our own language," said Matt Coppens, president of USF Democrats.
