TAMPA - Cornelia Corbett has poured her heart and soul into the Tampa Museum of Art, devoting time and money to ensure the city has a place to show its artwork.
And now that museum will bear her name.
Museum officials have announced that the new $26.6 million downtown facility, which is under construction along the Hillsborough River, will be named for Corbett, whose family foundation, the William Stamps Farish Fund, donated $5 million for the project.
Corbett's donation, the single largest private contribution to the art museum in its 29-year history, was a gift from her husband, Dick Corbett.
"Cornelia's dedication to this organization and our community is impressive, and the museum is honored to have her support," said Raymond E. Ifert, the museum chairman.
Cornelia Corbett served as the museum board's chairwoman from 2004 to 2007, and once owned the Tampa Bay Rowdies.
The museum is being built on the northern edge of Curtis Hixon Park. The museum's groundbreaking was held in April; it is scheduled to open in fall 2009.
