TAMPA - Waiting until polls closed today to announce results, nearly 70 percent of Hillsborough County schoolchildren voted to elect Democrat Barack Obama president in last week's mock election.
A total of 117,057 votes were cast by students in kindergarten through 12th grade in the first online mock election for the district. The district has about 191,000 students.
Obama received 69.6 percent of the votes; Republican John McCain, 30.4 percent.
Students in middle and high schools voted in races other than president and favored Democrats in all of the U.S. and state House races, even voting against incumbents:
District 9 congressional seat: Bill Mitchell, 41.8 percent; Gus Bilirakis, 40.5; other candidates, 17.7.
District 11 congressional seat: Kathy Castor; 70.3 percent; Eddie Adams Jr., 29.7.
District 12 congressional seat: Doug Tudor, 58.6 percent; Adam Putnam, 41.4.
Florida House, District 56: Lewis Laricchia, 55.3 percent; Rachel Burgin, 44.7.
Florida House, District 57: Yvonne Capin, 60.4 percent; Faye Culp, 39.6.
Florida House, District 60: E.J. Ford, 67.6 percent; Ed Homan, 32.4.
Florida House, District 67: Richard Jackson, 63.3 percent; Ron Reagan, 36.7.
Students approved all six constitutional amendments on the ballot.
Click for Democracy is Hillsborough's version of Kids Voting Tampa Bay, affiliated with the national nonpartisan Kids Voting USA program. Pasco, Pinellas, Hernando and Citrus county schools also participated, but with paper ballots.
