Fulmer News Affects Giles

TAMPA - It didn't take Jarvis Giles long to decide the University of Tennessee was the school for him. The Gaither senior tailback verbally committed to Tennessee in June during a visit.

But the news that Volunteers coach Phillip Fulmer is out at the end of the regular season has Giles reconsidering his decision.

"This is affecting me big time," Giles said. "I don't really know what I'm going to do. Right now, I'm trying to line up an official visit to South Carolina."

The Gamecocks were one of several Division I schools to offer Giles a scholarship. The others included Florida, Florida State and Georgia.

Fulmer's leaving doesn't just affect Giles. Tennessee heavily recruited in Hillsborough County this season and has made many offers, including Armwood's Angelo Hadley, Ryne Giddins and Petey Smith and Plant's Orson Charles.

SOFTBALL: Chamberlain senior infielder Marissa Menendez has de-committed from USF and chosen Central Florida, Chiefs coach Bob Diez said.

Menendez verbally committed to USF as a sophomore. Menendez finished her junior season with a .397 batting average, 27 hits, 25 runs and 22 RBIs.

Meanwhile, Chamberlain senior pitcher Alexandra Hartshorn has committed to the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, a Division II school. Hartshorn was 11-3 as a junior for the nationally ranked Chiefs.

WRESTLING: Brandon's Joe Cozart and Terry Dawson each posted top-eight finishes this weekend at the Super 32 Challenge in North Carolina.

Cozart placed fourth in the 145-pound division, while Dawson took seventh in the 112-pound division. The two Eagles were among six Florida wrestlers to place at the one-day tournament on Saturday. Cozart, a two-time state champion for the Eagles and the son of longtime Brandon coach Russ Cozart, was Florida's highest placer.

The nationally renowned preseason tournament at the Greensboro Coliseum Special Events Center had 1,250 total wrestlers representing 31 states; 103 wrestlers were reigning state champions, and more than 400 placed at their respective state tournaments last season. Hillsborough County wrestlers from Bloomingdale, Brandon, Riverview, Newsome and Tampa Bay Christian were among those in the tournament field.

BASKETBALL: Former Jesuit guard Charlie Mills will be a walk-on at Division I Holy Cross.

Mills, a 2008 Jesuit graduate, averaged 10.2 points, 4.1 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.3 steals per game his senior season. The 6-foot guard also owned a 4.24 GPA and scored a 1,270 on his SAT.

"Charlie was truly one of the hardest-working, dedicated, all-out hustling players I've coached in my 29 years here at Jesuit," Coach Neal Goldman said.

In other basketball news, Blake athletic director Stephen Williams announced Leikeisha Broughton will be the new girls basketball coach. Broughton was the girls junior varsity coach last year. She inherits a Blake team that finished 13-9 last year and 9-3 in Class 5A-District 10 play.
