ST. PETERSBURG - A 20-year-old Treasure Island man was arrested today, accused of stealing 93 bronze vases from the Woodlawn Cemetery, according to St. Petersburg police.
Jose Caraballo was charged with grand theft and dealing in stolen property.
Caraballo was arrested after he tried to sell the vases at the Pinellas County Recycling Center, police said. He presented a trash can full of chopped-up pieces of the vases, authorities said, and the center in turn contacted authorities.
Of the 93 vases taken from the cemetery at 101 58th St. S., 23 have been recovered, with 70 still unaccounted for, said St. Petersburg police spokesman George Kajtsa.
On Wednesday, a maintenance worker found more than $5,000 worth of vases missing from a corner of the cemetery. They are typically used to hold flowers left in memory of the deceased.
