TAMPA - Hillsborough County has again embraced the idea of purchasing and protecting undeveloped land, overwhelmingly approving an extension of a 21-year-old land preservation program.
By extending the Environmental Lands Acquisition and Protection Program on Tuesday, voters infused $200 million into the fund to purchase some 20,000 more acres duringthe next few decades.
Also Tuesday, voters agreed that if there were to be a county mayor, that mayor should have veto power over the seven-member county commission. A question to create the mayor's position was removed from the ballot after a court battle over an incorrect date on the petition residents were asked to sign.
A proposed Tampa charter amendment that would give the seven-member Tampa City Council the authority to hire and fire the council's attorney also passed.
