The Brandon High School gym was evacuated and the start of a state playoff volleyball game delayed Wednesday night after an off-duty Hillsborough County sheriff's deputy smelled gas, authorities said.
Firefighters arrived at Brandon High School, 1101 Victoria St., about 7 p.m. and found the natural gas coming from a physics classroom, Hillsborough County Fire Rescue spokesman Ray Yeakley said.
Two rooms at the school get natural gas piped in for use in science projects, Yeakley said. Fire crews determined the leaking gas was not flammable or explosive, he said.
Crews vented out the classroom, and the volleyball game between Brandon and Pasco County Ridgewood High School started after the 30-minute delay.
Brandon, which compiled a record of 24-1 this season, defeated Ridgewood in four sets. Brandon coach Amy Watson said her team may have lost the first set because her team was just starting warm-ups when the gym was evacuated.
Tribune reporter Nick Williams contributed to this report.
