FORT LAUDERDALE - The Florida attorney general has filed a $4 million lawsuit against Imperial Majesty Cruise Line LLC for allegedly collecting unfair fuel surcharges from customers.
Bill McCollum's office settled similar complaints by striking agreements with other cruise lines. Hundreds of customers complained they were being charged $20-$30 above fares booked months in advance.
The lawsuit filed Wednesday in Broward County Circuit Court alleges Imperial tried to say the fees were government-mandated. The Attorney General's office is asking customers who sailed with the company in the past two years to come forward.
Imperial representatives couldn't be reached for comment Wednesday, as its office was closed during normal business hours.
