TAMPA - The city's fire department wants to expand its reach into New Tampa with a new fire station off Bruce B. Downs Boulevard near County Line Road.
One catch: The city doesn't expect to build on the property for at least 5 to 10 years.
"It's a long-term project," said Bill Wade, spokesman for Tampa Fire Rescue. "We're hoping to eventually expand our coverage."
The city council on Thursday is scheduled to vote on whether to spend $1.3 million for the 2.2-acre site.
Eventually, the vacant tract would give rise to Fire Station No. 23, providing more coverage for residents who live along the city's northern border with Pasco County.
The purchase would be funded from $4 million in Community Investment Tax revenue that Mayor Pam Iorio earmarked two years ago to add two fire stations in New Tampa.
The city also plans to build Fire Station No. 22 in the New Tampa Area near Cross Creek Boulevard and Morris Bridge Road, a $2 million project slated to open by early 2010.
The council meets Thursday at 9 a.m. in city hall, 315 E. Kennedy Blvd., Tampa.
