ZEPHYRHILLS - First responders in Zephyrhills have a new lifesaving tool to help heart attack victims.
Earlier this week, both Zephyrhills Fire Rescue stations received new "Auto-Pulse" equipment that provides mechanical CPR to patients in cardiac arrest. The device can improve a victim's chance of survival by four times.
"Cardiac arrest is one of our most frequent calls for service," Chief Glen Clegg said. "I've had days where I've gone out on four cardiac arrest calls."
Each unit costs $15,000. The department won a grant from the Florida Bureau of Emergency Medical Services to cover 50 percent of the cost.
TAMPA - Here's a chance to try to avoid the flu bug this winter.
The University of South Florida College of Public Health, in cooperation with the Hillsborough County Health Department, will offer free flu shots to people 18 years old and older.
As long as the supply lasts, the shots will be given from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday at the USF College of Public Health, 13201 Bruce B. Downs Blvd., Building 3010. Nursing and medical students, under the supervision of physicians and other licensed medical personnel, administer the shots. Medical educational exhibits also will be on display.

TAMPA - Grab a sandwich and head to Joe Chillura Courthouse Square on Friday to show your appreciation for the nation's veterans.
The celebration, at 601 E. Kennedy Blvd., is from noon to 1 p.m. City and county officials will speak, and the middle school band from Rampello Downtown Partnership School will perform.
For information, call the Hillsborough County Veterans Affairs Office at (813) 975-2181.
TAMPA - The city will present conceptual plans for a bicycle and pedestrian trail along South Davis Boulevard on Davis Islands at a public workshop today.
The workshop will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the Sandra Freedman Tennis Complex, 59 Columbia Drive. Parks and recreation staff will discuss the plans and answer questions.
For information, call the city at (813) 231-1330.
PLANT CITY - For the majority of students and staff at Hillsborough Community College's Plant City campus, wake-up assistance and snacks have usually popped out of a vending machine.
Now, there's access to a good cup of java and a snack.
The Espress Yourself Coffee 101 kiosk recently opened at the HCC campus. Since then, students and faculty have been able to grab a fresh cup of their favorite coffee and a snack without having to go downtown, where the original shop is located.
Jon Davis, who runs the downtown and HCC shops with his wife, Heather, said the kiosk "fills a void" because there is no cafeteria or snack bar on the campus at 1206 N. Park Road.
He said that so far business has been steady.
The shop in the administration building is open 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
ST. PETERSBURG - The Christian Science Monitor, an international newspaper owned by the Christian Science Publishing Co., will sponsor a live Webcast program tonight at 7 on "The Future of Journalism" at The Poynter Institute, 801 Third Street S.
The free, two-hour program, broadcast from Boston, will include a panel discussion by five veteran journalists on how newspapers can survive in the digital age. Serving as moderator will be John Yemma, editor of the Monitor, which has won seven Pulitzer Prizes and is now in its 100th year of publication.
The Monitor has announced that in April of next year, it will transition to a daily 24-hour online operation and publish just one day a week.
An on-site discussion at Poynter will follow the Webcast. For information, call (727) 867-5456.
