TAMPA - A 22-year-old used his 72-year-old grandfather as a shield when police tried to arrest him early Wednesday on charges that he choked his girlfriend, authorities said in an affidavit.
Tampa police responded to the 400 block of North Hernandez Court shortly after midnight because of a fight between Rashad Lee and his girlfriend, the affidavit said. Lee had choked the woman with both hands, according to the affidavit.
When officers moved to arrest Lee, he pulled his grandfather out of a chair and "used him as a shield between himself and police," the affidavit stated.
No one was seriously injured, the affidavit said. Police arrested Lee after getting the grandfather to safety.
Lee was being held Wednesday morning at Orient Road Jail. Bail had not been set. He was charged with domestic battery, battery on a person older than 65 and resisting an officer with violence, all felonies.
Bus Driver Faces Drug Charges
A bus driver for the Pasco County School District filled several prescriptions for Oxycodone and a muscle relaxant by not telling doctors she had received prior prescriptions for the drugs, Temple Terrace police said.
From June 10 to Aug. 7, Vanessa Kunkle, 31, of Dade City, got the muscle relaxant and 1,040 Oxycodone pills, an arrest affidavit said.
She was arrested Tuesday and charged with trafficking in Oxycodone, two counts of possession of a controlled substance and 20 counts of obtaining drugs by withholding information.
She remained in Falkenburg Road Jail on Wednesday with bail set at $100,000.
Kunkle has been a bus driver for Pasco schools since March 2007, according to the school district.
Man Shot During Scuffle In Tampa
An Apollo Beach man was shot in the thigh about 4 a.m. Wednesday, deputies said.
Wayne Flint, 37, was shot during an argument at 3302 Belle Shadow Lane in Tampa, Hillsborough sheriff's spokeswoman Debbie Carter said. His injury was not life-threatening, she said.
Sex Offender Arrested Again
Police arrested a registered sex offender Tuesday after a woman said he had masturbated in front of her and her 6-year-old daughter, authorities said in an affidavit.
Moises Antonio Pacheco, 37, was charged with felony lewd or lascivious exhibition on a victim younger than 16. He was being held Wednesday at Orient Road Jail. Bail was set at $7,500.
According to the affidavit, the woman's daughter was standing on their front porch in the 1700 block of North Oregon Avenue about 7 p.m. Sunday when Pacheco pulled down his shorts and began masturbating. Pacheco lives at 2521 W. Union St., about six blocks away, records show.
The child screamed for her mother, who ran outside and also saw Pacheco masturbating, authorities said. The mother called police and identified Pacheco from photos.
Pacheco told police he had exposed himself to urinate, the affidavit said.
According to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Pacheco has been a registered sex offender since April 2005, when he was convicted of lewd or lascivious exhibition on a victim younger than 16.
3 Charged With Gun Thefts
Two Plant City men and a 17-year-old boy who broke into an unoccupied home Oct. 23 and took a Russian assault rifle, two shotguns and two other guns have been arrested, Hillsborough County sheriff's deputies say.
Deputies arrested Justin B. Sales, 18, at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday; George Kandel, 24, was arrested at 7:40 p.m. Saturday. Details on the 17-year-old's arrest were not available.
The trio also stole two laptops, a 36-inch, flat-panel television and a Wii game at the home, a criminal arrest affidavit states.
The items are worth about $3,100, deputies said.
Sales was charged with five counts of grand theft-firearm and one count each of armed burglary and grand theft.
Kandel faces the same charges, as well as five counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm.
Kandel and Sales remained in Orient Road Jail on Wednesday. Kandel was being held without bail; Sales' bail was set at $20,000.
Misuse Of 911 System Charged
A woman who called 911 while police were sorting out a dispute in which she was involved has been charged with misdemeanor misuse of the 911 system, records show.
Sharon Cartwright, 45, also is charged with misdemeanor resisting an officer without violence. She was being held Wednesday at Orient Road Jail. Bail was set at $1,000.
Tampa police arrested Cartwright about 1:45 a.m. Wednesday at her home at 808 E. Osborne Ave. According to an arrest affidavit, Cartwright was involved in a dispute there at the time and said she was going to call police because "she wasn't happy" with what the other people were saying.
Police said Cartwright was warned not to call 911 because it was not an emergency, but she dialed the emergency number anyway.

Jail Deputy Faces 2nd DUI Charge
PINELLAS PARK - A Pinellas County detention deputy was arrested Tuesday night on a drunken driving charge, the sheriff's office said.
Aaron O. Simpson, 28, was arrested near Belcher and Bryan Dairy roads at 8:43 p.m., Sgt. Jim Bordner said.
Bordner said Simpson was weaving and nearly forced an off-duty detective off the road.
Simpson, who was on pretrial release for a previous drunken driving charge, was put on administrative leave with pay.
Marijuana Sent To Office
A crate sent from Tempe, Ariz., to Suraj V. Gonga's office in Riverview was filled with about 100 pounds of marijuana, Hillsborough County deputies say.
The sheriff's narcotics unit intercepted the crate, the sheriff's office said, and Gonga, 32, of Riverview, was charged with trafficking in marijuana, conspiracy to traffic in marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Deputies say Gonga signed a false name when receiving a transport document and that his cell phone number was on the document. A search of Gonga's office led deputies to a scale and baggies, which each had marijuana residue, an arrest affidavit states. The marijuana has a street value of $100,000, deputies say.
Gonga was released from Orient Road Jail Wednesday after posting $25,000 bond.
