Published: November 6, 2008

Several activities are planned to honor those who have served the country. Veterans Day is observed Tuesday. Events include:

GARDEN DEDICATED: A new garden will be dedicated at the Veterans Memorial at Orange Lake at 11 a.m. Friday. The New Port Richey Garden Club is responsible for the new garden to commemorate the sacrifice of veterans.

VFW Holiday Post 10167 Honor Guard will begin the ceremony with a three-round volley from the firing squad while a flag is presented by the casket team. "Taps" will be played, and the flag will be presented to a veteran's widow.

PARADE PLANNED: A Veterans Day parade hosted by Main Street Zephyrhills will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in downtown Zephyrhills.

The parade will kick off activities for Music and Motorcycles, to be held from 2 to 9 p.m. along Fifth Avenue in downtown Zephyrhills. The event will feature a 12-class bike show with trophies and cash prizes. The entry fee is $10. Registration will be from 4 to 5:30 p.m.

Music, food and drinks will also be featured throughout the event. For information, call Main Street Zephyrhills, (813) 780-1414, or e-mail msz@verizon.net.

TALENT SHOW: The Zephyrhills Historical Association will sponsor a talent show featuring patriotic music at 7 p.m. Saturday at the American Legion Hall, 5340 Eighth St. Admission will be by donation.

FLAG CEREMONY: The Veterans Club at Pasco-Hernando Community College will hold a Veterans Day flag ceremony at 4:30 p.m. Monday.

The ceremony, which is open to the public, will be near the flagpole outside Building A on the college's New Port Richey campus at 10230 Ridge Road, New Port Richey.

Kelvin Faison, a PHCC assistant professor of psychology, will be the guest speaker. The River Ridge High School Junior ROTC team will lower the flag.

TABLE DANCE PLANNED: The Dance Club of Betmar Acres will hold a Veterans Day-theme table dance at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Betmar Acres Clubhouse 2 on Lakewood Drive.

Music will be by Hank Beranger. Reservations will be taken at 8:30 a.m. today at Clubhouse 2. Betmar Acres is a 55-and-older mobile home community.

CEREMONY PLANNED: Veterans' Day will be celebrated in Zephyrhills at 11 a.m. Tuesday with a ceremony coordinated by the Veterans' Council at the Veterans' Memorial Walkway in Zephyr Park on State Road 54 West.

HONORING VETERANS AND FAMILIES: Saint Leo University welcomes veterans and their families from the university community and from neighboring areas to attend the annual Veterans Day ceremony at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the main campus in Pasco County.

The observance will be held at the flagpole on the campus quadrangle, between Saint Edward Hall and Saint Francis Hall.

This year's event carries added significance for Saint Leo University. During the year, the university has been celebrating its 35th anniversary of providing higher education to members of the armed services.

Guest speaker for the event is Army Lt. Col. James B. Butters, a military intelligence specialist and professor of military science and leadership at the University of South Florida at Tampa. Faculty, staff, students and administrators, including Saint Leo University President Arthur F. Kirk Jr., will participate in the program. Doves will be released at the end of the ceremony.

No classes will be held at the main campus on Veterans Day, also the fall Community Service Day at Saint Leo. This allows students, faculty and staff to attend the ceremony and then, after a community lunch, volunteer their afternoon to assist nonprofit service organizations such as East Pasco Habitat for Humanity, Catholic Charities, San Antonio Boys Village and others. Volunteers from Saint Leo take on maintenance, cleaning and office work projects at some nonprofits, and visit with the elderly at other agencies.

FREE CARWASH FOR VETS: Veterans will get a free car wash from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday at the Dade City Car Wash, 13010 U.S. 301.

New owners Tim and Rosie Linville "wanted to honor those that have served us," Rosie Linville said. "My brother is in Iraq serving in the military, and my husband's family has served in the military."
