Letson Going To Florida State
Plant standout Doug Letson, one of Hillsborough County's top boys golfers in each of the last three seasons, has verbally committed to Florida State University.
Letson said Wednesday the Seminoles recently extended a scholarship offer, and he made his verbal commitment Tuesday evening.
"It is very relieving," Letson said. "I have a lot of hard work ahead of me, though, but it's definitely exciting to be a part of a program like FSU."
Letson claimed individual medalist honors at the Class 2A-District 10 tournament this season after finishing as runner-up in 2006 and 2007. In each of the last three seasons, he has posted top-10 finishes at the region tournament.Letson said he will sign with the Seminoles during the early signing period, which begins Wednesday.
GIRLS TENNIS: Chamberlain senior Jennifer Miller has verbally committed to Stetson University and will sign her letter-of-intent Wednesday at Chamberlain.
Miller, along with former teammate Jamie Mera, won the Class 3A No. 1 doubles state championship this spring and went undefeated during regular-season play as the Chiefs' No. 2 singles player.
FOOTBALL: Orlando Agape Christian was forced to forfeit three wins this week for using an ineligible player, including an Oct. 17 victory against Carrollwood Day. The Patriots, in their inaugural season of 11-man football and playing as an independent, improve to 3-6 with the forfeit victory.
HONORS: East Bay senior cross country/track and field performer Lauren Verbosky and Boca Ciega volleyball player Olivia Hopper are among 20 Florida finalists for the Wendy's High School Heisman Award, which recognizes student-athletes who excel in athletics, academics and student leadership.
