ST. PETERSBURG - A man accused of trying to drag a teenage girl from a bus stop into his car has been arrested, police reported.
Oneil Sylvester Brown, 26, 1526 39th St. S., was arrested Thursday night and charged with attempted kidnapping, St. Petersburg police said.
Brown, a Jamaica native who worked at a retail store that caters to teenagers, was being held in Pinellas County Jail for federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement authorities, police said.
Police said Brown was driving a silver 2008 Mazda SUV past a bus stop at 2601 22nd Ave. N. about 9 a.m. Thursday. Two 14-year-old girls were waiting there for a public bus to take them to school, police spokesman Bill Proffitt said.
The girls told police the driver honked his horn as he drove past, then made a u-turn. He parked and offered them a ride. When the girls refused, he got out, grabbed one of them by the arm and began dragging her to his car, Proffitt said.
The girl kicked him in the leg and escaped, though one of her arms was scratched. As the man fled in his car, the girls wrote down his license tag number and went home to call police, Proffitt said.
He said the car had a distinctive pair of large dice and a lanyard hanging from the rearview mirror. Investigators were able locate Brown and arrested him.
Investigators are asking that anyone who might know of similar unreported incidents notify them at (727) 893-7746.
