The driver of a 2006 Ford truck is in critical condition and his passenger is in serious condition after a crash Friday afternoon on U.S. 17 south of Fort Meade in Polk County, troopers say.
Matthew E. Powers, 40, of Fort Meade, was driving at a high rate of speed on U.S. 17 about 2:11 p.m. when he overtook slower traffic, a Florida Highway Patrol news release states. Powers tried passing slower vehicles by driving on the roadway's shoulder but lost control of the vehicle, which rode onto the center median and overturned.
Powers was ejected, troopers say, and passenger Vicky L. Horn, 40, of Fort Meade, was seriously injured.
The vehicle came to rest on its roof and blocked the southbound lanes. The road was closed for more than an hour, troopers say.
Powers was taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Center, and Horn is at Florida Hospital.
Charges are pending, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
