TAMPA - An 18-year-old man faces arson charges after setting his kitchen on fire with lighter fluid, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.
Maurice Dwayne Joseph was arrested by deputies about 10 p.m. Thursday after he told an emergency medical technician he set the fire, according to the arrest report.
Firefighters responded to the fire at Joseph's home at 406 E. Gladys St. While Joseph was being treated for smoke inhalation, according to the technician, he said he sprayed lighter fluid on the kitchen counter and in the oven, then lit it. Joseph refused to leave when firefighters arrived and had to be removed from the home, the technician said.
Joseph's mother and father were in the house at the time of the fire and were not injured.
Authorities said Joseph faces a mandatory mental evaluation.
