Driver Dies Swerving To Avoid Collision

A Lakeland man died in a crash about 3:30 p.m. today on Rockridge Road near U.S. 98 in Polk County.
Bobby R. Whitehead, 64, died at the scene.
The crash occurred after Jenna Shelby exited a Shell gas station's parking lot in her 2006 Chevrolet and drove west on Rockridge Road, a Florida Highway Patrol news release states.
Whitehead overtook Shelby, 23, of Lakeland, while driving his 2000 Chevrolet. He tried to pass her but lost control of his vehicle, which traveled off the paved portion of the roadway and onto the south shoulder, troopers say.
Whitehead's Chevrolet came back onto the paved portion of road, rotated counterclockwise, slid off the paved portion again and struck a utility pole, according to the release. He wasn't wearing a seat belt and was partially ejected.
The road was closed for three hours after the crash.
