TAMPA - A Tampa International Airport noise flight track report showed jets making an approach to the airport from the south, after making a 180 degree turn near MacDill Air Force Base from their southbound and downwind leg, are in compliance with air traffic standards.
The report released Thursday showed 2 percent of the 16,655 arrivals at issue made turns north of MacDill Air Force Base, rather than south of the base. Those turning north of MacDill could fly lower over residential areas, creating more complaints by residents.
Airport officials conducted the report partially in response to complaints by 17 nearby residents of the airport who filed complaints from July through September.
Noise complaints declined 28 percent to 283 from July through September compared with the same quarter in 2007, senior airport planner and noise officer Herman Lawrence Jr. previously reported.
One household accounted for 61 percent of the complaints compared with 92 percent of the complaints from the same household for the year-ago period.
Airport officials said aircraft turning north of MacDill could result from weather or airspace conditions. Pilots ultimately choose the runway they wish to land on based on safety and other factors.
