TAMPA - Hillsborough County School Board incumbent Carol Kurdell has won re-election, vote totals show.
With about 3,700 provisional ballots still out, Kurdell, the board's longest-serving member with 16 years, won with more than 52 percent of the vote over challenger Stephen Gorham. Tuesday's election was a run-off for the District 7 at-large seat because neither received enough votes to win outright in the August election.
Kurdell is in line to become board charwoman Nov. 18.
Until this campaign, Kurdell had been one of the quietest board members and a loyal supporter of Superintendent MaryEllen Elia.
Gorham, 30, had argued that some board members are "too close" to Elia.
The four-year term pays $40,887 plus benefits.
