Land Purchase For Fire Station Approved

TAMPA - The city council on Thursday voted unanimously to approve spending about $1.3 million to purchase a vacant 2.2-acre site in New Tampa for a new fire station.

Eventually, the property would give rise to Fire Station No. 23, providing more coverage for residents who live along the city's northern border with Pasco County.

The purchase would be funded from $4 million in Community Investment Tax revenue that Mayor Pam Iorio earmarked two years ago to add two fire stations.

Tampa Fire Rescue officials said it might take five to 10 years to build the firehouse, but Councilman Joe Caetano said he expects to see it built within the next two years.

"It has to be built," he said at Thursday's council meeting. "We need it."

The city also plans to build Fire Station No. 22 in the New Tampa area near Cross Creek Boulevard and Morris Bridge Road. The $2 million facility is slated to open by early 2010.
