NEW PORT RICHEY - A pup that almost starved to death is doing well these days, thanks to the staff at the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Suncoast chapter.
Justice has made a full recovery after several months of medical care and multiple daily feedings.
The 8-month-old Labrador mix was 20 pounds when he was found in a parking lot in July. Every bone in his body was visible, and he would have died within days had he not received food and medical care.
Justice was placed with an SPCA foster family to recover.
After doubling his weight and gaining enough strength to undergo surgery, Justice was neutered and put up for adoption.
His foster family decided to make him a permanent member of their household. Justice now enjoys the good life with his new human and canine playmates.
"Justice is a true example of the perseverance of spirit," SPCA Suncoast executive director Martha Murray said in a release. "When we added the components of love and care, he just blossomed."
Justice will serve as the "honorary canine chair" of SPCA Suncoast's second-annual Howliday Festival of Lights.
The event will illuminate the SPCA shelter at 7734 Congress St. with thousands of holiday lights representing donations. People can sponsor individual lights for $10 each, an animal enclosure for $100 or a part of the outdoor holiday display.
For information on the festival, call Traci Theis at (727) 643-3647.
