Plant's Ramos Commits To UT
Plant senior baseball player Graham Ramos has verbally committed to the University of Tampa, Panthers coach Dennis Braun announced Friday.
Ramos, an infielder, hit .364 with six doubles, four home runs, 25 RBIs and 25 runs scored for the Panthers as a junior.
"Graham has worked real hard, and he's had a great summer and it's finally paid off for him," Braun said. "He's going over to the University of Tampa, which I think is a great fit for him."
Braun said Ramos will sign with the Spartans during the early signing period, which begins Wednesday.
SOFTBALL: Riverview senior pitcher Katie Gwinn will sign with Saint Leo University on Wednesday, Riverview's athletics department announced.
Gwinn was 7-3 on the mound with 71 strikeouts, four shutouts, one save and a 1.45 ERA last season. She also batted .260 with 20 hits, five runs and 13 RBIs.
Meanwhile, Alonso senior catcher Courtney Clark, who has committed to the College of Charleston, will sign her letter of intent on Wednesday. Clark hit .351 with 20 hits and eight RBIs as a junior.
BASKETBALL: Plant freshman guard Michael Frazier was named the Most Outstanding Guard at the 2008 Rookie Sensation camp at Ocala Vanguard High. The camp featured some of the top eighth-graders and high school freshmen in the state.
Plant boys basketball coach Mike Phillips said the 6-foot-2 Frazier will play on the varsity team this year.
Here's what Jim Clark wrote on FloridaProspects.com about Frazier: Nice perimeter shooter with range; big 2-3 combo who has adequate ball-handling skills to fill in as a point guard; very active on the court; will find the open man inside and loves to pound the offensive glass; outstanding transition skills. Most overall rounded guard at camp; will start on varsity for state power this season."
Newsome freshman forward Dylan Bridges was selected as one of the top nine players in the camp's Bakers Dozen.
Here's what Clark wrote about the 6-1 Bridges: Showed signs of being a good baseline player because of his ability to attack the glass; added strength will improve his ability to finish; tough-minded hustler who will pull up and hit the 3-pointer; will play varsity in 2008-09."
Plant freshman Anthony Haynes (6-1) was also mentioned as a player to watch.
