SHOW-STOPPERS

Published: November 7, 2008

Tampa's International Auto Show opened at noon Thursday, offering peeks of and chances to sit in cars ranging from everyday Chevys to exotic Lamborghinis.

Hybrid-drive models were a big theme in the show with most major automakers either selling or displaying future hybrid or all-electric models.
Exotic sports cars drew many longing eyes, with Ferrari, Aston Martin and Spyker cars on display - even an original "General Lee" from the TV series "The Dukes of Hazzard."

Still, there were already signs the sudden freeze on auto sales is affecting splashy shows like this one. Show organizers have started renting exhibit space to washer/dryer sellers such as Famous Tate, chamois cloth hawkers and tooth whitening companies.

"With things like the chamois guy, we're expanding what people can see at the show," said show spokeswoman DeeDee Taft. "With the economy, not everyone is rushing to buy cars. We're trying to offer some affordable family fun. Cars are the stars, but we want to have some fun with it, too."
