TAMPA - You better get to Tampa International Airport on time if you intend to catch a departing flight.
Tampa International continued to rank among the nation's best major airports in flight performance, ranking seventh nationwide in September with 90 percent of flights leaving within 15 minutes of schedule, a U.S. Department of Transportation report released today said.
Tampa ranked 14th in arrivals, with 86.7 percent of flights arriving within the department's on-time standard.
Arrivals performance generally indicates conditions at the departure airport and en-route weather. The exceptions generally are airports in New York and Chicago, where airliners can stack up awaiting a clear runway for landing.
Salt Lake City ranked first in both on-time departures and arrivals performance in September, with 93.3 percent and 92.9 percent on-time respectively.
New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport ranked last in arrivals performance with 71.9 percent on-time, while Chicago O'Hare International Airport ranked last in departure performance at 78.6 percent on-time.
Flights operated by the nation's largest airlines arrived on time at a higher rate this past September than in either September of last year or in August 2008, the DOT reported.
The 19 airlines reporting on-time performance recorded an overall on-time arrival rate of 84.9 percent in September, higher than both September 2007's 81.7 percent and August 2008's 78.4 percent.
