GAINESVILLE - A man flying to Gainesville for a kidney transplant, his wife and a pilot were killed when their twin-engine aircraft attempted an instrument landing and crashed short of the Gainesville airport early Friday, police said.
Killed in the crash were: pilot Andrew Ricciuti, 43, who flew for charter company Air Key West, patient Gordon Bennett Taylor, 51, and his wife, Barbara Taylor, 52, all of Key West, said Gainesville police Officer Summer Hallett.
The crash occurred about 2:45 a.m. near the Gainesville Regional Airport runway, said Kathleen Bergen, a Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman in Atlanta.
Dense fog and thick foliage hampered search efforts for the plane, which was cleared for an instrument landing.
The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash.
