Pinellas Tightens Water Limits

Published: November 8, 2008

CLEARWATER - Water use rules in Pinellas County will be enforced more strictly now that continued dry conditions have prompted water officials to clamp down, utilities officials said Friday.

The order comes after the Southwest Florida Water Management District governing board recently called for more conservation in Pinellas, Pasco and Hillsborough counties because of a lack of rain.

Lawn watering in Pinellas will continue to be restricted to one day a week, and prohibited between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Other restrictions include:

•Hand-watering of non-lawn landscaping is only allowed before 8 a.m. or after 6 p.m.

•Watering of new sod and landscaping is permitted only three days a week after the first month: even-numbered addresses on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday; odd addresses on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.

•Decorative fountains and waterfalls may only be operated four hours a day.

Pinellas utilities officials said violations observed after Nov. 15 will result in a citation.

The county also asks that people postpone planting new grass or landscaping that will increase water use.

The utilities department has water conservation programs, which include rebates for ultra low-flow toilets and alternate water sources for lawn irrigation; water conservation tips; and free low-flow shower heads, water-saver kits, rain gauges and hose shut-off nozzles.
