Paying tribute to those who served and are serving - in the nation's military, a color guard and elected officials marked the upcoming Veterans Day with a ceremony in downtown Tampa on Friday.
At the remembrance, held at the Joe Chillura Courthouse Square, the Rampello Downtown Partnership middle school band played and members of the U.S. Air Force 6th Air Mobility Wing, Central Command, Special Operations Command and coalition military officers attended. Active-duty patients wounded in combat who are being treated in Tampa appeared and were honored at the ceremony.
It was sponsored by Hillsborough County, the Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce, the city of Tampa and the Tampa Downtown Partnership. Most government offices will be closed for Veterans Day on Tuesday.
Today, the annual Veterans Day Parade will be held in Town 'N Country, featuring marching bands, Gasparilla floats and pirates, Scout troops, military groups, politicians and civic leaders. It will honor Army Cpl. Aaron Griner, a combat medic who died June 28, 2006, in Afghanistan.
