MCKETHAN LAKE - The Wharton boys and girls cross country teams took both district titles Thursday afternoon at the Class 3A-District 3 championship meet.
Land O' Lakes senior Felix Soto won the boys race, his third district title, in 15:45. Soto beat Groveland South Lake's Joshua Wolfe, who finished in 15:54.
Wharton's girls had 37 points. Ocala Vanguard and Land O' Lakes both had 100 points, but Vanguard took second place because their sixth runner had a higher finish than the Gators.
Vanguard's Tori Lawson won the girls race in 18:38. Wharton's Alyssa Franks was second in 19:20.
Wharton's boys beat Land O' Lakes 61-64 for the title.
"Our guys did what they had to do and it seemed to come down to my fifth runner," Wharton coach Wes Newton said.
"Thank goodness, he is a track guy. That's Gilbert Rodriguez. We took this boys district title last year, but Land O' Lakes has gotten tremendous in the last year."
The top 15 boys and girls individual finishers will advance to the Class 3A regional meet Nov. 15 in Winter Haven.
The top six girls teams and the top eight boys teams also advance to the regionals.
