Wyoming Adds To Tennessee's Misery

Published: November 9, 2008

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Just when it seemed it couldn't get any worse for Phillip Fulmer and Tennessee, Wyoming came to town.

Five days after Fulmer became a lame-duck coach, ousted effective the end of the season, the Volunteers lost 13-7 on Saturday to the Cowboys.

Wyoming came in a nearly four-touchdown underdog, the lowest scoring team in major college football and languishing near the bottom of the Mountain West Conference.

It seemed like a perfect opportunity for a homecoming pick-me-up for Fulmer and the Vols, who still had hopes of qualifying for a bowl.

Instead, the Volunteers (3-7) will be home for the holidays in the 17th and final season under the coach who led Tennessee to its last national title.

"Obviously it's been a really hard week on everybody," Fulmer said. "If anything, I should be apologizing to the fans and everybody for this whole week coming about."

Ward Dobbs returned an interception 24 yards for Wyoming (4-6), which improved to 3-1 against Southeastern Conference teams under Coach Joe Glenn.

NO. 14 GEORGIA 42,

KENTUCKY 38

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Matthew Stafford threw for 376 yards and the go-ahead touchdown to A.J. Green with 1:54 remaining to lift No. 14 Georgia to a win over Kentucky.
Knowshon Moreno ran for 123 yards and three scores and wide receiver Mohamed Massaquoi atoned for two fumbles by hauling in a career-high eight receptions for 191 yards and a touchdown as the Bulldogs (8-2, 5-2 SEC) survived a major scare from the Wildcats (6-4, 2-4).
Freshman quarterback Randall Cobb ran for 82 yards and three scores for the Kentucky, but threw an interception to Georgia's DeMarcus Dobbs at the Georgia 13 with 46 seconds remaining and the Bulldogs escaped.

SOUTH CAROLINA 34,

ARKANSAS 21

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Steve Spurrier shuffled things up again, alternating quarterbacks Stephen Garcia and Chris Smelley most of the way in South Carolina's victory over Arkansas.

The Gamecocks (7-3, 4-3) have won four of their past five Southeastern Conference games since starting 0-2 in the league, snapped a two-game losing streak to Arkansas (4-6, 1-5) and put themselves in position for a New Year's Day bowl game.

And they did it through one of the South Carolina coach's quirkiest trademarks.

The former Heisman Trophy winner is known for being tough on quarterbacks. Only a short time after Garcia threw two touchdowns to bring South Carolina its first home win over Tennessee in 16 years last week, Spurrier complained that the Jefferson High graduate wasn't ready to run the offense.

Smelley got first chance, overthrowing receiver Jason Barnes. Then Garcia entered and hit Kenny McKinley with a 30-yard pass to the Arkansas 14. After Smelley was incomplete on the next play, Garcia rushed past the Razorbacks for a touchdown.

AUBURN 37,

TENNESSEE MARTIN 20

AUBURN, Ala. - Kodi Burns ran for 158 yards and two long second-half touchdowns and passed for another 130 yards, pushing Auburn to a win over Tennessee Martin.

The Tigers (5-5) had lost four straight games and found themselves tied midway through the third quarter with the Football Championship Subdivision Skyhawks (7-3) before Burns started breaking loose.

He scampered 31 yards for a touchdown on a third-and-6 play to give Auburn a 27-20 lead in the third quarter.
