CHEYENNE, Wyo. - The driving winds that blew into Cheyenne last week swept up mounds of tumbleweeds from the high plains and dropped them on a quiet neighborhood, blocking residents' doors and prompting a city cleanup project.
In a scene reminiscent of a science fiction film, residents of Hawthorne Drive woke up Thursday morning to find the dried brush piled up against their windows and doors by the northwest winds.
Tumbleweeds blow into town every fall, but a city official says this dump is noticeable because the winds of Wednesday and Thursday were the first extreme weather after a relatively calm fall season.
The National Weather Service reported sustained winds of 35-40 mph in the city with gusts up to 66 mph.
A chest-high wall of tumbleweeds obstructed Linda Reid from getting her morning newspaper Thursday. She says she's used to wintry blizzards — but not tumbleweed blizzards.
