TAMPA - Believing Francisco Hernandez had disrespected him, a SUR-13 gang member struck Hernandez several times in the head with a machete Friday night at 14206 12th St. N., Hillsborough County deputies say.
Two other SUR-13 gang members attacked Hernandez's friend, striking him with fists and beer bottles, a Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office news release states.
According to the news release, the attack began at 11:23 p.m. Friday, when Hernandez and a friend were walking home, and they encountered three Tampa men who live at 14206 12th St. N., Apartment 1: Jose Leon, 22; Joaquin B. Mondragon, 22; and Ernesto Canales, 29.
The trio believed Hernandez disrespected them, and a fight began, deputies say. It wasn't immediately clear what Hernandez did that made the trio think he didn't respect them, sheriff's spokeswoman Debbie Carter said.
Leon armed himself with a machete and struck Hernandez several times in the head, the news release states. Mondragon and Canales attacked Hernandez's friend, according to deputies.
Hernandez was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital and is in stable condition, deputies say. His friend was treated at the scene.
