TAMPA - A national team of volunteer urban designers will paddle down the Hillsborough River on Tuesday, kicking off a week of assessing how to make Tampa a more livable city.
The Sustainable Design Assessment Team is a community assistance program that brings a national team of volunteer professionals to work with local decision-makers and stakeholders.
The Tampa team, called "Connecting Tampa," will meet this week with local officials, neighborhood representatives and others before making recommendations on how to update the city's planning guidelines.
The river trip fits into three of Tampa's goals for making a city more livable: conserving natural assets, creating beautiful public spaces and connecting neighborhoods. The themes were identified by a team of national urban experts.
The assessment team will meet at Lowry Park at noon Tuesday, ride to Rowlett Park, and paddle canoes and kayaks down the river back to Lowry Park. Anyone with a canoe or kayak interested in joining the trip and talking to the experts is welcome. You can rent a canoe for a $25 donation, or $15 for students.
The Sustainable Design Assessment Team is sponsored by Urban Charrette, a local coalition of young urban planners and architects whose goal is to make Tampa a better place to live.
