TAMPA - Tampa International Airport continues to fare better than some other Florida airports in the airline industry's latest moves to conserve on fuel costs by trimming flights or replacing larger aircraft with smaller planes.
Airlines announced reductions in the number of seats on departing flights of mostly between 10 and 15 percent across the United States for the final three months of the year, Tampa International officials said in a report released last week. The reductions will continue in January.
In addition, Tampa International Airport fared well along with Chicago Midway Airport, Orlando and Las Vegas in Southwest Airlines' announcement last week to change schedules at 55 airports nationwide effective in March.
Southwest will add an additional flight to six destinations it already serves from Tampa International: Baltimore, Columbus, Ohio; Hartford, Conn.; Nashville, Tenn.; Philadelphia; and Providence, R.I.
Southwest added 140 flights while dropping 78 nationwide, for a net gain of 62.
