TAMPA - Keep Hillsborough County Beautiful is competing with other environmental organizations to collect as many retired cell phones as possible and fill its coffers with $5,000 in cash.
The top four collectors will receive the cash, which will be used to help educate the public on the importance of reducing waste and supporting the anti-littering effort, said Executive Director Christine Commerce.
The event celebrates America Recycles Day, which is Saturday.
In the United States, Commerce said, more than 130 million cell phones are retired each year, accounting for 65,000 tons of waste.
To participate, go to www.KHCBonline.org and download and print a free mailing label that can be used to mail the cell phones for the Cell Phone Roundup.
"The goal is to provide a fun way to show people how easy it is to recycle a retired cell phone," said Matthew McKenna, president and chief executive officer of Keep America Beautiful. "The best part of the program is virtually everyone has one or two unused retired cell phones that could be recycled."
