Although it seems like we just put those Halloween decorations away, it's not too early to start prepping for the winter holidays, particularly when it comes to sending packages to our troops overseas. In fact, Thursday is the deadline for sending holiday packages overseas using Parcel Post to all Air/Army Post Office or Fleet Post Office ZIP codes. Here are some tips for sending treats to the troops:
• All packages and mail must be addressed to individual service members, as required by U.S. Department of Defense regulations.
• All military mail, regardless of the destination, is sent by the domestic mail rate. International rates do not apply.
• You can confirm delivery by using Delivery Confirmation, which is available for most military destinations outside the United States. This service provides you with the date, ZIP code and time the package was delivered. Go to www.usps.com for information.
• The U.S. Postal Service also offers Military Care Kits. Each free kit contains three flat-rate boxes, two cube boxes, nine address labels and 16 customs forms. Order a kit by calling Expedited Package Supply Center at 1-800-610-8734.
• Consider using Priority Mail's Large Flat-Rate Box. It includes a $2 discount to APO/FPO destinations and ships for $10.95.
