LAKE BUENA VISTA - Davis Love III won the Children's Miracle Network Classic at Disney, closing with an 8-under 64 for a one-shot victory against Tommy Gainey on Sunday in the final PGA Tour event of the year.
Love scrambled for pars on the final two holes, including a tough bunker shot to 3 feet on the 18th, to hold off a late charge from Gainey, who shot 30 on the back nine of the Magnolia Course and closed with a 64.
"I always questioned, 'Am I doing the right thing? Why am I still doing this,'" the 44-year-old Love said. "I didn't doubt my desire, or that I could still compete, it was just the little things I had to do."
It was the 20th career victory for Love, giving him a lifetime exemption on the PGA Tour.
Love, who finished at 25-under 263, won for the first time in more than two years and earned $828,000.
NATIONWIDE: Matt Bettencourt began his week at the Nationwide Tour Championship in McKinney, Texas, with kidney stones and a trip to the hospital. He ended it with a victory and the season money title. Bettencourt, who shot 17-under 267 after Sunday's 69, made $180,000 to win the money title with $447,863. He earned full exempt PGA Tour status.
Former Florida Southern golfer Jeff Klauk shot a 65 to finish second at 16-under 268. He finished third on the money list with $407,418 to earn one of the 25 PGA Tour cards.
PGA EUROPEAN: A Ryder Cup surprise two months ago, England's Oliver Wilson was just 16 holes away from the first significant victory of his career.
The moment could come in the final round of the HSBC Champions in Shanghai, China, today. Rain washed out play Friday, delaying the third round - and a few holes of the fourth - until Sunday.
Wilson shot a 3-under 69 for a three-round 12-under 204. He parred the first two holes of the fourth round before play was halted by darkness.
Australia's Geoff Ogilvy and American Phil Mickelson shot 70s in the third round, leaving Ogilvy a stroke back and Mickelson two behind in his title defense.
LPGA: Shin Ji-yai won the Mizuno Classic in Shima, Japan, for her second LPGA Tour title and ninth international victory of the year, shooting a 5-under 67 to finish at 15-under 201 and easily hold off Mayu Hattori (67-207).
