SAN FRANCISCO - A federal jury has ordered the NFL Players Association to pay $28.1 million to retired players after finding the union failed to properly market their images.

The figure includes $21 million in punitive damages awarded to the former players Monday afternoon. It's just short of the $21.9 million award that the players' lawyer had asked of the jury, or roughly 10 percent of the union's net worth at the start of the year.

A union lawyer urged the jury to award a far lesser amount so as not to damage the union's ability to represent its members.

The class action lawsuit represents 2,056 retirees who contend the union cut them out of lucrative licensing deals.

BENGALS: Said quarterback Carson Palmer will miss his fifth straight game because of an injured passing elbow. Ryan Fitzpatrick will start in his place against the Eagles on Sunday.

CHIEFS: A woman filed a lawsuit against running back Larry Johnson a month after saying he spit a drink in her face at a bar and threatened to kill her and her boyfriend.

The lawsuit by Ashley N. Stewart accuses the two-time Pro Bowler of negligence, assault and battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress and negligent infliction of emotional distress.

JETS: The five-time Pro Bowl cornerback Ty Law agreed to terms on a one-year deal after sitting out the first 10 weeks of the season as a free agent.

PATRIOTS: Adalius Thomas is the latest starter who might miss time after the linebacker suffered what could be a long-term arm injury.

Thomas didn't return after leaving the Patriots' 20-10 win over the Buffalo Bills midway through the second quarter Sunday. The Patriots said only that he hurt his arm, but ESPN.com, quoting unnamed sources, reported Thomas broke his left forearm and "likely" will miss the rest of the season.

SAINTS: Cornerback Mike McKenzie's fractured right kneecap will keep him out for the rest of the season.

SEAHAWKS: Matt Hasselbeck is ready to make his first start in six weeks Sunday when Seattle plays first-place Arizona.

LEGAL: A man accused of shooting Jaguars offensive lineman Richard Collier 14 times pleaded not guilty at his arraignment in Jacksonville.

Tyrone Romaro Hartsfield, 32, stood silently as his public defender entered pleas of not guilty to charges of attempted murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Hartsfield is accused of shooting Collier on Sept. 2.
