Durant's Sullivan Picks West Fla.

Durant senior baseball player Ty Sullivan has verbally committed to the University of West Florida, a Division II program.

Sullivan, a left-handed pitcher, went 5-5 with a 2.64 ERA as a junior. He struck out 70 and walked 30 in 581/3 innings pitched.

A three-year varsity player at Durant, Sullivan also played for Chet Lemon's Juice 18-under squad. This summer he helped the Juice win the 18/19-under Division I National Championship in Lake Buena Vista and was named to the all-tournament team.

Sullivan will sign with the Argonauts on Thursday afternoon at Durant. The early signing period for sports other than football begins Wednesday.

BOYS SOCCER: Grace Christian (18-1-1) won its second straight Florida Christian Conference state championship, and 12th in the past 16 seasons, on Friday with a 1-0 victory over Wade Christian. Game MVP Alex Lanfranconi scored the game's only goal with five minutes remaining.

HONORS: East Bay senior cross country/track and field performer Lauren Verbosky was named Friday as the female student-athlete winner of the Wendy's High School Heisman Award for the state of Florida.

A total of 102 state winners were selected Friday, one male and one female student-athlete from each of the 50 states and Washington, D.C. That number will be reduced to 12 national finalists later this month; one male and one female student-athlete from each of the six designated geographic regions. The 12 national finalists will be invited to New York City for Heisman Weekend activities, including the Wendy's High School Heisman Award banquet.

The Wendy's High School Heisman Award recognizes student-athletes for their excellence in athletics, academics and student leadership.
