Lakeland Pedestrian Hit By Car, Killed On U.S. 98

A 49-year-old pedestrian from Lakeland died following a crash Monday night on U.S. 98 in Polk County.

Brian Joseph Jones walked into the path of a 1984 van driven by Virgil Funk of Lakeland while he was crossing at Daughtery Road about 7:44 p.m., according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Jones was thrown into the intersection and died at the scene. He has not been identified.

Funk, 47, wasn't injured.

The intersection was closed to traffic for about three hours, troopers say.

No charges have been filed, troopers say.
