Published: November 11, 2008

TAMPA - Nine-year-old Dayron Fernandez was like a kid with a new toy Monday, skipping from one playground apparatus to the next at Al Lopez Park. Actually, he was a kid with a new toy.

The playground officially opened Monday. The $325,000 facility, paid for out of the park improvement fund and the community investment tax, takes the place of the nearly 20-year-old wooden structure that had fallen into disrepair.

Al Lopez Park, situated between Himes Avenue and North Dale Mabry Highway south of Hillsborough Avenue, is one of the city's most heavily used parks. Events often are staged there, and the playground serves more than just the children in the community, officials said.

This Is Music To Your Ears

CARROLLWOOD - For music lovers who have longed to visit the orchestra but might be intimidated or those who just want to brush up on their knowledge, a new program is here to help.

The Carrollwood Cultural Center has teamed with The Florida Orchestra to offer the new Music Notes program.

The cultural center will host four lectures in the discussion series to coincide with performances at The Florida Orchestra. The first lecture, scheduled Monday, will cover composers Joseph Haydn and Johannes Brahms, featured in the orchestra's Masterworks Series.

Tickets are $15 a discussion or $40 for the series. For information, call The Florida Orchestra Guild at (813) 960-1121.

More Business On North Dale Mabry?

LUTZ - The Hillsborough County Commission is set to vote on a proposal Thursday that would boost commercial potential at two spots on the northern end of North Dale Mabry Highway.

It's an issue that has pitted area residents and the Lutz Civic Association against people who own property along the highway.

The board is scheduled to meet at 6 p.m. at the Frederick B. Karl County Center, 601 E. Kennedy Blvd., Tampa.

C.R. 579 Bridge Back In Business

WIMAUMA - Workers have completed construction on a County Road 579 project that began nearly five months ago.

The plan involved upgrading and fixing some of the supports on a small bridge that traverses the Little Manatee River.

Work began June 27 and continued intermittently until the reopening, which was Friday.

During that time, motorists traveling south from Hillsborough had to use State Road 674 and U.S. 301; drivers coming north from Manatee County had to take State Road 62 to U.S. 301.

Diocese Edition Calls It Quits

ST. PETERSBURG - After 40 years, the St. Petersburg edition of the Florida Catholic newspaper has ceased publication, opting for an expanded, free magazine that will be mailed six times a year to registered Catholic families in the diocese.

Changes also include a revamped online version of the paper.

The last print edition was published Oct. 24.
