PLANT CITY - Construction of a memorial park to honor veterans is expected to start in Courier Field early next year.
More than a dozen members of the committee overseeing the project met this morning to talk about the plans for the park. Plans call for the memorial to include a monument to all veterans, a gazebo, gathering area for 350 people, landscaping and more.
The look of the park, including 8-foot sidewalks with brick accents, will have the "feel of the historic district," said Jennifer Closshey, chairwoman of the veterans monument committee.
Closshey said it was fitting that the group would meet on Veterans Day to decide details of the project, which will honor veterans and all five branches of the Armed Forces. She hopes the memorial can be dedicated on Veterans Day 2009.
The veterans project will built in phases at Courier Field, a city park at Wheeler and Herring streets, just north of Bruton Memorial Library.
City commissioners will consider plans for the park at their next meeting Dec. 8. If the commissioners give their approval, work at the city park would start in January or February.
The monument was considered for other locations, including the parking lot of City Hall, before supporters settled on the city park.
