Older Americans and women appreciate the value of travel for the holidays to create memories and build relationships more so than others, a survey by the Travel Industry Association released this morning found.
The Washington-based travel industry trade group commissioned a Harris Interactive survey of 2,256 adults last week who plan to travel for the holidays. The survey did not tally what percentage of those originally contacted planned to travel this season.
Among all groups and ages, only 37 percent of those who will visit families or friends think they are obligated to do so, but 70 percent see it as an opportunity to maintain tradition.
Of those who intend to hit the road or catch a flight over the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, 79 percent of those 55 and older think being with family and friends creates memories for themselves or their children compared with 61 percent among those age 18 to 34 and 58 percent among those age 35 to 44.
About 77 percent of women think being with family and friends created memories compared with 58 percent of men.
Parents with young children appreciate others coming to see them, with 64 percent of those with children younger than 6 thinking the time and money friends and family spend to visit represents a gift to them.
