HUDSON The bodies of two divers missing since Tuesday were found tonight near the entrance of underwater caves in Pasco County, authorities said.
Both divers, whose names have not been released pending notification of relatives, were from Hillsborough County, authorities said.
The Pasco County Sheriff's Office contracted divers today to search what is known as School Sink, sheriff's spokesman Kevin Doll said in a statement. The underwater caves are on Steven Drive near Old Dixie Highway in Hudson.
The divers found the bodies about 6:30 p.m., Doll said. One body was found near the entrance of School Sink, less than 50 feet from the surface. The other diver was found in a side tunnel, Doll said.
Authorities are trying to determine what happened to the divers. The search began after a vehicle owned by one of the divers was found near the sinkhole.
School Sink is part of an underground aquifer with miles of tunnels and numerous entry points, Doll said.
The lure of cave diving in the area has proven deadly over the years. The Eagle's Nest dive site in Weeki Wachee has claimed several lives, including two experienced divers in 2004, a diving instructor in 1990 and two people in 1981, one of whom was a rescue diver.
