Airfare Deals Abound On Nontraditional Travel Days

TAMPA - You can find some airfare bargains as long as you're not trying to travel during peak holiday periods.

Southwest Airlines is offering its first sale on airfares since May on flights primarily for the non-holiday periods between Dec. 2 and Feb. 11.

Spirit Airlines continues to offer bargains, such as $41 one-way fares between Tampa and Atlantic City, N.J., while Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, United Airlines, Continental Airlines and US Airways matched Southwest fares on competitive routes.

Southwest's tickets are only available through Thursday and must be booked for flights 21 days in advance.

One example is a $69 one-way Southwest fare between Tampa International Airport and New Orleans.

Other Southwest discounts, including some that could be lower than the sale fares, are available through Southwest's free online Ding! subscription.

Spirit is offering a sale through tonight for flights between Tampa and Fort Lauderdale on six days in November for $21 one-way – including Thanksgiving Day, which generally is regarded as an off-peak travel day.

Spirit fares are priced at $42 one-way between Tampa and Atlantic City on six days from December through January, including Christmas Day, also an off-peak travel day.

Spirit also has a $9 Fare Club subscription service that provides a $9 discount on all flights. It also lists bargain fares discounted at lower than advertised sales. Participation requires a $9 charge for a 60-day trial period and $39.95 for an annual membership.

Unadvertised bargains on other airlines listed on airfarewatchdog.com include a $165 round trip between Tampa and Denver on Continental Airlines; a $425 round-trip fare between Tampa and Honolulu on American; and a $205 round-trip fare between Tampa and Seattle on Continental, American and United.

Fares do not include taxes and fees.
