PLANT CITY - An eagle with outstretched wings was selected Tuesday as the favorite design by a committee overseeing a veterans memorial planned for a city park.
The eagle on a pedestal will be the centerpiece of a tribute to all veterans. About a half-dozen renderings were considered.
Plans for Courier Field call for the memorial to include the monument to all veterans, a gazebo, gathering area for 350 people, landscaping and more.
The look of the park, including 8-foot sidewalks with brick accents, will have the feel of the city's historic district, said Jennifer Closshey, chairwoman of the veterans monument committee.
Closshey said it was fitting that the group met on Veterans Day to decide details of the project, which will honor veterans and all five branches of the Armed Forces. She hopes the memorial can be dedicated on Veterans Day 2009.
The veterans project will built in phases at Courier Field, a city park at Wheeler and Herring streets, just north of Bruton Memorial Library.
City commissioners will consider plans for the park at their next meeting Dec. 8. If commissioners approve, work at the city park would start in January or February.
