TAMPA - A community forum on a youth golf program at Rogers Park Golf Course will be held at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the course, 7911 N. Willie Black Drive.
The event will be hosted by the Tampa Metropolitan Area YMCA, which has a contract with the city and the Tampa Sports Authority to provide the First Tee of Tampa Bay program. The national program teaches golf and life skills primarily to low-income, at-risk youth. The YMCA plans to renovate the course's original clubhouse as First Tee headquarters.
Program participants will include youngsters from Franklin Middle School and Academy Prep as well as local Boys & Girls Clubs, parks and recreation groups and church youth groups.
A group known as Citizens Who Support Keeping Rogers Park Public opposes the contract, which the Tampa City Council approved two years ago. Group members worry the YMCA's involvement is a step toward privatizing the golf course, which was the only one open to blacks during segregation.
Tea Tradition On Tap Thursday
It will be all about tea, scones and fashions from the past on a veranda when a tradition returns this week.
The Home Association Annual Silver Tea, which began in the 1920s, is being revived. It will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday at the association's historical landmark building, 1203 E. 22nd Ave.
There will be English tea and scones from South Tampa's Royal Tea Room served from fine silver services. Vintage dresses from the 1920s and 1930s provided by La France in Ybor City will be modeled by association board members and volunteers.
Donations will be accepted, and sponsorships are available. For information, call development director Jan H. Kuehnert at (813) 275-9891.

Hoedown Helps As Fundraiser
RUSKIN - The Ruskin Woman's Club will host an old-fashioned hoedown Saturday, with proceeds going to help fight hunger and to dress wounded soldiers in specially fitted clothing.
The hoedown is 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Ruskin Elks Lodge on U.S. 41, south of downtown Ruskin.
Half of the money raised from a steak dinner and the hoedown will benefit Heifer International, an organization that fights hunger in the United States and abroad by helping families become self-reliant through gifts of livestock. Money will also go to Woman's Club projects for the Mary and Martha House and for Sew Much Comfort.
Sew Much Comfort is a program to provide adapted clothing to returning wounded soldiers. Women in the club take regular clothing and adapt it to fit the needs of the wounded, including Velcro T-shirts and pants with wide legs to accommodate braces.
Tickets are $25 each. For information, contact Betty Jo Council at (813) 645-8228.

1-Way Plan Has 2 Distinct Sides
ZEPHYRHILLS - The city council wants more public input before endorsing a plan to convert Gall Boulevard to a one-way street.
The Florida Department of Transportation wants to widen the road, also known as U.S. 301, by converting it to a pair of parallel one-way streets.
City and DOT officials agreed to schedule an open house in Zephyrhills before the end of the year to address concerns from residents and business owners.
The $70 million project is aimed at alleviating congestion between State Road 39 and North Avenue. The state would limit traffic on Gall Boulevard to northbound vehicles and would raise the speed limit from 35 mph to 45 mph. All southbound traffic on Gall would be diverted to Sixth Street.
City leaders have opposed the idea of one-way traffic, particularly if both streets are widened from two lanes to three lanes.
