SHADY HILLS - Students at Bishop McLaughlin Catholic High School began and closed their school day Tuesday the same way: with a prayer vigil for fellow student Alessandra Augello, one of two teenagers who died Monday night after a collision less than a mile from the school.
Augello, 17, of Spring Hill, and 19-year-old Alyssa Annmarie Dyer of Hudson both died at the scene of Monday's crash, which happened about 7:15 p.m. Dyer was five months' pregnant.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Dyer was driving east on Hudson Avenue when her car veered into the westbound lane and struck the front of Augello's 2003 Saturn. Both teens were wearing their seat belts but the combined force of the impact, estimated at 100 mph, was too much, said Highway Patrol Sgt. Steve Gaskins.
Bishop McLaughlin Principal Sarah Regan said Augello, a senior who went by the name Ally, was on her way home from play rehearsal when the accident happened.
Dyer had attended Hudson High but dropped out within the past year, earned her GED, went to Certified Nursing Assistant training and began pursuing a nursing career, her step-grandfather, Pedro "Pete" Carrion, 70, said at their home Tuesday.
She was on her way to the home she shared with her fiance when she was killed, he said. Shortly before the crash Dyer sent a text message to Nick Schewe, saying she loved him and she was on her way home. Schewe tried to call her back, he said, but couldn't get through.
Jail Supervisor Reinstated
TAMPA - Lt. Michael Farrier, who was suspended following the escape of a Falkenburg Road Jail inmate last month, has been reinstated to administrative duties, Col. Jim Previtera said Tuesday.
Deputy James Flagg, who reports to Farrier, remains suspended without pay.
After a search that lasted nearly a week, deputies found escaped inmate Raymond Marston on Oct. 30 hiding near the same bridge where authorities say he raped a woman in May.
Marston, 50, escaped from Falkenburg Road Jail as he was being escorted to a medical clinic. Flagg had left Marston to call and see where the escort deputy was, and when Flagg returned, Marston was gone.
Farrier and Flagg initially were suspended at Sheriff David Gee's discretion. An investigation into the escape is ongoing, Previtera said.
Flagg has been a sheriff's office employee since April 2006.
Marston was captured after a tip from two homeless brothers.
Wiring Sparks Apartment Fire
TAMPA - An electrical short sparked a fire Tuesday afternoon at a North Rome Avenue apartment complex, Tampa Fire Rescue officials said.
No one was hurt. The fire was under control in 35 minutes and caused about $20,000 in damage to one unit, authorities said.
Fire crews responded to Waterman's Crossing Apartments in the 4500 block of North Rome Avenue about 1:53 p.m. and saw smoke coming from the three-story apartment building, Tampa Fire Rescue Capt. Bill Wade said in a statement.
The complex's maintenance workers saw smoke coming from a vacant apartment, pulled a smoke alarm and evacuated the building. A smoldering fire was found in the walls of the bathroom in apartment 306, Wade said.
The cause appears to be an electrical short, he said.
There have been previous problems at Waterman's Crossing with smoke alarms, authorities said.
In September, about a dozen fire inspectors and city code officials visited the complex and found numerous violations, including that many of the apartments had nonfunctioning smoke alarms.
Trio Accused Of Cocaine Sales
Hillsborough County deputies arrested three people Monday afternoon they say were involved in cocaine dealing: Francisco Javier Rodriguez-Arana, 28, of Tampa; Irving Betancourt, 21, of Tampa; and Enid Jimenez, 30, of Brandon.
According to criminal arrest affidavits:
On Oct. 23, Rodriguez-Arana delivered about 7.8 grams of cocaine to an investigator for $300.
On Oct. 30, Rodriguez-Arana delivered 54.6 grams of cocaine to an investigator for $1,840. Betancourt had met with Rodriguez-Arana and handed him the cocaine to deliver to the investigator.
On Monday, Rodriguez-Arana delivered about 101 grams of cocaine to an investigator in a Home Depot parking lot in Brandon. Rodriguez-Arana sold it for $3,150. Jimenez had gotten the cocaine from Betancourt and given the cocaine to Rodriguez-Arana.
The trio remained in Orient Road Jail today. No bail had been set.
Lakeland Crash Kills Pedestrian
A 49-year-old pedestrian from Lakeland died following a crash Monday night on U.S. 98 in Polk County.

Jones, thrown into the intersection, died at the scene. Funk, 47, wasn't injured.
