TAMPA - With the region's drought conditions worsening, the city is still using millions of gallons of drinking water to keep lawns and flower beds green and toilets flushing.
Since January, the city has used:
139 million
Gallons of
potable water;
cost to taxpayers:
$391,740
15 Million
Gallons of
reclaimed water;
cost to taxpayers:
$24,277
That's about $2.82 per 1,000 gallons of potable water, and $1.62 per 1,000 gallons of reclaimed water.
The city uses the water for parks, pools, public bathrooms, community centers, medians and city-owned cemeteries.
Tampa Bay Water managers have outlined a program to replace drinking water with reclaimed water for lawn irrigation by 2025.
